Ghost Of Lies

Shade and Sierra have been here for a while. And what better way to give them their first big test at SHL than to have convicted of treason and Amy’s boyfriend murdered? This should be fun… And for the record, I wanted to write the prologue, but Kristy beat me to it, so I’m just going to use her’s

Prologue

The clouds hide what moonlight there is, casting a black gloom on the streets. He won’t notice, and won’t see, just keeps on working. The scientist was trying to convert the Mirror into a machine. A tapping almost like footsteps grows louder, coming closer to the lab door, then stops. He shakes his head, dismissing the noises. The last few wires are connected and in place, and he flicks the switch to ‘on’. Lights flash on and a foggy light turns on inside the lens. He moves his hand behind it, and at first there are many colors, each standing for a different emotion or state of being. All in an instant, all the colors black out, which seems to be turning a darker black each second. The black stands for death. The mirror can tell the near future.

His eyes widen and hands start to shake, forcing him to drop the machine, which shatters. He races to grab a pen and paper, frantically scribbling down a note. The door bangs open, and there is a sudden flash of a blade. There is no time to run, no time to scream. He is stabbed in the heart, which kills him almost instantly. A shadowy figure stands up, leaving the knife in his heart. After standing there for a moment or two, it disappears out the door and into the shadows.

The letter sits on the table in the midst of some shattered glass. A small breeze blows through the room from the door, and a silver mist slinks through the air. It passes over the letter, and as it does so, new writing in silver ink fades into existence at its end.

Chapter 1

I walked into the door from a night of shopping with government money. I know shopping is a girly girl thing, but I bought an awesome pair of running shoes. A little time in the lab and I can have extreme roller shoes.

When I walked in the house, Jason was glaring at me. In fact, almost all my friends were glaring at me. Kristy, Sierra, Rick, Linda, Amy, Tyler, Dan, Shawn, and even TJ.

“Hi guys.” I said nervously as they formed a sort of half circle around me. “What’s up?”

“Jamie,” Jason said, still glaring. “I think you know why we’re here.” I tried to read his thoughts to find out, but everything was quiet. Weird.

“What are you talking about?” For once, I really had no idea what Jason was talking about. And that’s a first.

“She’s lying!” Kristy shouted out, “I can’t hear a word she’s thinking. She’s trying to hide it.”

“Hide what? Unless you’re totally power locked, you should be able to hear that I have no idea what you’re talking about!”

“Does this refresh you’re memory?” Rick said, holding up his computer. A picture of a building wall was on it. The wall was covered in bright blue spray paint that said:

“Isn’t that you’re SHL username and password?” I asked Jason.

“No duh!” He said, clearly mad. “Don’t act all innocent. I can’t believe you would do something this awful.”

“But I didn’t do that! I was at the mall.”

“You?” Sierra said, “At the mall? Wow, you’re lying skills are getting worse and worse.”

“I’m not lying!” I was starting to shout. Being accused of something bad I did do is one thing, but I didn’t do this! And I hate being accused for something I didn’t do. “I have the new shoes to prove it!”

“You know what to do, Jason.” Rick said. He and Linda glared at me then walked back to Rick’s car. He’s probably going to tell someone at SHL about this. Jason growled at me.

“Jason!” I said, “You know I didn’t do this! So Kristy can’t hear me, but I know you can. I swear I didn’t do it.”

Jason paused for a second. I didn’t need to read his mind to know that he didn’t want this to be true. Even though he’d never say it out loud, he’d die a thousand times for me. He loves me. Yet, his thoughts were still quiet…

“Jamie.” He said in a defeated voice. “Go. I’m going to call Mr. S.” He pointed towards my orange cage.

“What?” I said. How could he not be able to know that I was telling the truth? “Kristy. You’ve got to believe me! We’ve been friends for, like, ever!”

“Jamie, I-I-“ I saw tears in her eyes. I knew her worst fear is being betrayed by her friends. “I just can’t believe you.” She turned away and started walking to the lab.

“Sierra?” I said, turning to my water loving friend.

“The facts are against you. Sorry.” Sierra turned away from me too. She started walking with Kristy.

“Aw come on guys! You know I’m stupid and reckless and heartless, but I’m not this stupid or reckless or heartless!” I think they paused for a second, but they kept on walking.

“Amy?” She was my sister, she couldn’t really-

“I can’t believe you.” She said in a harsh tone. “SHL science work is my life and you just gave away enough secrets to ruin everything. You could get us all killed. You’re worse than Lily.”

That one hurt, but she’s my sister. She’s Amy! I took a step closer. “Amy, please! You’re my sister. You have to believe me! I’m not lying!”

“Get away from me.” She said, taking a step back. “And stay out of my lab.”

Only Shawn, Dan and TJ were left. Shawn and Dan didn’t say anything. Even though they were totally annoying at SHL, they clearly loved the place. They glared at me, and then walked away. Then it was just me and TJ. We had been through so much together, he would believe me.

But before I could say anything, Jason came back out from his room where he was calling Mr. S. Like Mr. S. didn’t hate me enough already.

((Don’t worry, the chapter’s not over yet! =D))
